Gotham Plastic Surgery is the only office in the heart of midtown Manhattan, New York to offer Dual Coolsculpting. This allows two areas to be treated at once. Dual CoolSculpting allows faster treatment time for optimal patient comfort and convenience.
CoolSculpting, an FDA-approved non-surgical cosmetic procedure, gives patients the option to say good-bye to stubborn fat that has localized in areas of the body where it is the most difficult to get rid of. The abdomen, back, flanks, and other regions of the body can be treated without the risks that invasive liposuction pose. There is no anesthesia needed, no need for incisions or needles, and absolutely no scarring. Best of all, there is no recovery time and patients can be back to their normal routine immediately following the CoolSculpting procedure.
Length of CoolSculpting
Each CoolSculpting session lasts approximately 30-60 minutes, and we recommend at least two sessions for the stomach area.
Is Anesthesia Used?
No anesthesia is used during CoolSculpting due to the minimally invasive nature of the treatment.
Inpatient or Outpatient?
All CoolSculpting procedures are performed on an outpatient basis.
Who is an Ideal Candidate for CoolSculpting?
If you have deposits of fat on your body that you have not been able to eliminate by other means, CoolSculpting could be right for you. CoolSculpting can also be helpful to people who have lost weight on their own but would like to contour their body in a specific way or who would like to eliminate the last few deposits of fat that remain. Another reason many choose to get CoolSculpting is in preparation for an important event. This treatment is ideal for women and men of all skin types.
Side Effects of CoolSculpting
There are minimal side effects associated with CoolSculpting, but some common side effects include slight bruising, redness, swelling, and skin sensitivity for a temporary period of time, as well as paradoxical hyperplasia.
Due to the minimally invasive nature of the procedure, there is usually no downtime associated with CoolSculpting.
How CoolSculpting Treatment Works
During the CoolSculpting process a specially designed device, manufactured by Zeltiq Aesthetics, Inc., is used to permanently eliminate fat cells and fat deposits found under the surface of the skin. Harvard medical scientists developed this technique which crystallizes the subcutaneous cells before the body removes them safely through natural metabolic processes. The patented procedure, which is founded on the science of cryolipolysis, was FDA approved in 2010.
The CoolSculpting device delivers freezing temperatures through the skin to underlying fat cells. They crystallize as a reaction to these very cold temperatures and undergo apoptosis, a process of cell death. The fat is gradually absorbed by the body, making it a safe procedure in comparison to others which can cause injury to surrounding healthy cells or trauma to other parts of the body, such as muscles and nerves. CoolSculpting has been proven to result in up to a 25% fat reduction in the treated area.
Patients will discuss their concerns about unwanted fat with the surgeon who will then be able to develop a plan of action for the treatment. The fairly simple process takes about one hour, during which patients can spend their time as they please. Since there is no sedative required for the painless procedure, many patients choose to listen to music, read a book, or get some work done on their laptop or tablet.
The area of the body that is being targeted will be outlined with a gel before the device is applied. Cooling panels on the device will deliver the freezing temperatures that will commence the cell apoptosis. When the device is removed, the skin may appear to have a pink or red hue for a few minutes to a few hours due to the cold contact. The area may feel slightly tender for 24 hours following the readjustment of the body back to its normal temperature, though many patients do not experience any unusual sensations. Some patients report mild bruising. This is due to the pressure of the device but will subside by two weeks.
Benefits of CoolSculpting
CoolSculpting is a non-invasive treatment used to help eliminate stubborn fat from various parts of the body. It can be used anywhere stubborn fat has settled. Some of these treatment areas include:
- muffin top
- double chin
- love handles
- back fat
- above the knee
- under the buttocks
- male breasts (gynecomastia)
We use specialized attachments made for the CoolSculpting device to treat specific areas. In addition to effectively treating and eliminating stubborn fat, CoolSculpting results in little to no downtime, and few patients report discomfort during the procedure.
Another benefit of this procedure is its natural results. Because fat slowly fades away after a treatment, your new contours will appear at a natural pace and not cause anyone to question how.
When Do CoolSculpting Results Become Visible?
While the fat cells are frozen immediately during the CoolSculpting procedure, results don't begin to appear until several weeks to a couple of months after the procedure. The results from this procedure occur gradually over time.
CoolSculpting Before and After Photos in New York
The results of the CoolSculpting procedure are not immediately noticeable and can take 3 weeks before any changes are seen. The benefit of the body working at a slower rate to remove the unwanted fat cells is that the outcome is natural looking and no one will suspect you underwent any procedure at all. Only one treatment is needed, though patients may certainly elect to have CoolSculpting performed on other areas of the body after seeing the amazing results. CoolSculpting can also be used to treat the same area after three to four months when the body has fully been expunged of the damaged cells.
The risks associated with CoolSculpting are minimal. The most common are numbness, tingling of the skin, and some minor bruising in the targeted area. All side effects are temporary and resolve within a few weeks.

CoolSculpting vs Liposuction
While CoolSculpting and Liposuction are both designed to eliminate stubborn fat, there are some key differences between the two procedures. CoolSculpting is a 100% non-surgical procedure that eliminates stubborn fat for those who are already relatively satisfied with the overall shape of their body. The CoolSculpting procedure eliminates fairly small fat deposits, and due to the non-surgical nature of the procedure, there is no downtime associated with the procedure. Liposuction on the other hand, is a surgical procedure that is designed to eliminate large fat deposits and can contour the body at a much more significant scale. Therefore, due to the surgical nature of the procedure, there is some downtime and recovery period shortly after the procedure.
